Academy Mission:

Our instructors will provide standardized, up to date & relevant training to become force multipliers for law enforcement in Wyoming

Those selected to be Patrol Officers must successfully complete the Wyoming Highway Patrol Recruit Academy and be certified by the Wyoming Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission. See "Training Sequence" (below).

Training Sequence:

Civilians :

  •  Attend the Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy Basic (15 weeks)
  •  Wyoming Highway Patrol Academy (15 weeks)
  •  Commission & move to assigned duty station
  •  Field training with a senior trooper for a minimum of fifty (50) working days 
  • After completion of field training, new troopers begin work on their own 

Wyoming certified officers:

  •  Attend Wyoming Highway Patrol Academy (15 weeks)
  •  Commission & move to their assigned duty station
  •  Field training with a senior trooper for a minimum of thirty (30) working days
  • After completion of field training, new troopers begin work on their own 

Out-of-state certified officers :

  • Attend Wyoming Highway Patrol Academy (15 weeks)
  • Commission & move to their assigned duty station
  • Field training for a period of thirty (30) working days
  • After completion of field training, new troopers begin work on their own 
  • Attend Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy's Wyoming Criminal Law course & take "Challenge Exam" (2-1/2 weeks)

Training costs, Laramie County Community College tuition/fees, and full salaries during this training are paid by the State of Wyoming. Lodging at the Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy and meals will be provided during the training period and are paid by the State of Wyoming. Recruits are required to stay at Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy during the training period.

Equipment & Uniforms

All equipment and uniforms, except boots/shoes, are provided by the State of Wyoming. Each officer is issued a take-home patrol vehicle which is not to be used for personal transportation when off duty. Vehicle Maintenance expenses are paid for by the State of Wyoming.

Probation Period

All applicants accepted as Patrol recruits must serve a one-year probationary period. Patrol Officers may be required to accept assignments and to reside and serve in any duty station as deemed necessary by the Administrator. The recruit will pay the cost of moving to the first duty station.
